“Smartmatic, an international company with offices in Boca Raton, has contacted the Justice Department to deny allegations that its Venezuelan owners paid a bribe to secure a $91 million contract to supply electronic voting machines in Venezuela,” the Miami Herald reports, citing a company attorney.
The allegations apparently come from a former Smartmatic chief financial officer and a former controller, the company says.
”We have informally told the Justice Department that there is no basis for these allegations,” says Washington lawyer Jeffrey Bialos.
Bialos also denied allegations that Smartmatic, a Delaware company, failed to pay U.S. income taxes.
Bialos said that US Justice Department officials told Smartmatic earlier that it was not the target of a criminal investigation, and that the company has not received any subpoenas.
