At the Tarrant County Sheriff’s office in Fort Worth, the county judge and newly elected executive, the district attorney, and the sheriff hold a news conference to announce a new Election Integrity Task Force.
“A notable absence from the press conference: Heider Garcia, the person in charge of running Tarrant County elections,” reports KERA, the local affiliate of National Public Radio.
Judge Tim O’Hare is the new county executive. The DA is Phil Sorrells and the ShWaybourn, Sorrells and O’Hare sat they did not consult with Garcia about the task force.
They allege no wrongdoing and acknowledge that reported instances of voter fraud are few. “There has not really been in the past a central place for people to go or they didn’t know where to go” to report suspected electoral fraud, O’Hare says. They make no allegations against Garcia.
Two people in Tarrant County had been convicted of election fraud, in 2016 and 2018 voting, before Garcia’s arrival.

1. Why would Heider Garcia, who had earned an excellent reputation as county elections administrator, not be present at the news conference?
2. Why did the county judge/county executive, district attorney, and sheriff not consult with him about setting up the Election Integrity Task Force?
3. Why did Garcia not create an election integrity reporting system on his own as county elections administrator?
4. Did Garcia’s longtime role at Smartmatic, including the 2010 Philippine elections, play any impetus in the county’s creation of the task force without his consultation or participation?
