In a London statement, Smartmatic CEO Antonio Mugica accuses the Maduro regime of having “manipulated” the turnout numbers, and claims his company had the integrity to detect the fraud.
“Turnout figures in Venezuela’s Constitutional Assembly election were manipulated up by least 1 million votes, Smartmatic, a company which has worked with Venezuela since 2004 on its voting system, said,” according to Reuters.
Mugica makes the admission in the form of criticism of the Maduro regime in his home country of Venezuela.
In this case, Mugica says that the manipulation was over the number of people who turned out to vote, and not manipulation of the voting or tabulation themselves. The manipulation was the electronically generated numbers of those who actually voted.
In his words, “We know, without any doubt, that the turnout of the recent election for a National Constituent Assembly was manipulated.”
“We estimate the difference between the actual participation and the one announced by authorities is at least 1 million votes,” Mugica says.
Smartmatic says that the million-vote difference is between the regime’s official figures and the numbers of voters whose ballots the company processed.
A total of 8.1 million Venezuelans officially voted in the election, which was to elect a constituent assembly to write a new, dictatorial constitution.
