The Treasury Department’s Committee on Foreign Investments in the U.S. is investigating Smartmatic’s ownership of Sequoia Voting Systems, the New York Times reports.
Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) called last May for a CFIUS probe into Smartmatic’s alleged direct ties to the Hugo Chavez regime in Venezuela. Smartmatic’s co-founder and CEO is a Venezuelan citizen who led the company to run the Chavez government’s voting systems in 2004.
Maloney called for the investigation in response to concerns that Smartmatic’s acquisition of Sequoia Voting Systems, an American company, presents a national security risk and a risk to the integrity of Ameridcan elections.
